I was listening to some hardcore nostalgia enthusiasts recently discussing whether or not Sega was dead since the Sammy merger and if the name should just be retired. And I'll admit that there was a good chunk of time during and after that merger where I felt the same way. But over the last year, their community efforts and internal titles like Valkyria Chronicles, plus external publishing with Platinum Games and now Tri-Ace has really started changing my opinion. I know Shaun will chime in, he is in fact the harder retro Sega lover when it comes to SMS. I traded places with him when the Saturn and Dreamcast came along and he leaned a little more Nintendo ;)
What do you guys think?

How can SEGA be dead when they're still making games? Like 'em or not, Sonic titles have a devoted audience. People who grew up playing those titles may not like the direction of the new games, but what do they want? To not grow out of liking things? The same 2D games over and over? Make a new game, and people accuse you of selling out the franchise. Make the same game, and people blame you for not having imagination. Glad I don't make games.
The same thing happens with bands with long careers. They get flak for moving in different creative directions yet if they don't, they get flak for making the same album again.
SEGA has some great games recently released and some promising ones are coming up. Yeah, they've done some questionable things with franchises (Golden Axe '08 was weird). But they seem to be coming back into their own style that we loved about them all those years ago.

I'd argue that Sonic titles have always sucked. You were just too impressed with the speed as a kid to notice that they were crappy platformers. ;)
That's besides the point. Sega has been kicking ass lately, eh?
I mean, just take a look. House of the Dead: Overkill, Mad World, Valkyria Chronicles (which really makes me want a PS3) are all bloody fantastic. Sega is doing a better job on the Wii right now than Nintendo is.

What's a Sega?
If I'm not mistaken I believe that's a type of pepper grown in Tibet.

I'd agree with the above, Sega isn't dead, far from it.
As far as their image being sullied, maybe so, but I'd say that it's pretty much par for course with other big developers. Ubisoft makes a few great games, and a few stinkers, same with EA, and pretty much every other developer.
Have they lost a bit of their former glory? maybe so. I imagine producing the next installment of Shenmue, or another Panzer Dragoon might win back old fans, but I don't think the creative individuals responsible for those games are even still with the company.
