1  Gaming / Sony / God of War III : this war just got godlier on: March 30, 2010, 07:28:59 PM
Who's playing it?

Started last week and playing fairly brief hour long sessions between other games. Just slowly getting used to the combat, haven't played a combat intensive game in many moons. Finished two boss battles now and now things are really starting to click.

I have it, but I've barely touched it. I can see the appeal but I'm not really looking for that type of experience right now. I like shooters, I like Diablo, but I dunno, pass for now. I don't even mind that it has barely any story, some times I just like grinding and playing online with other people, it just lacks that special something that catches my eye.

Recently completed Heavy Rain.

Playing Demon's Souls right now, loving it more than I had ever really expected.

Rituro: I can't really say how similar the DS game is to the PC games, haven't played them (shame on me, I know). My gut feeling, being only familiar with the original games from old magazines, is that it bears little resemblance at all...but don't let that get in the way of playing a good game!

I would liken it to a mix of Puzzle Quest and Advance Wars. It plays like a match-3 Bejeweled style puzzler, instead of playing on one field of jewels (or in this case, soldiers) you face off against an opponent, each player with their own play field. You line up your troops and then they cross over from your field into your opponents (from the bottom screen to the top) and attack.

maybe this youtube clip will be more informative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glalbwuJlqc

As you go through the game you'll try out different armies, gain new troop types, level up your guys, find new items, all that good rpg stuff. The Capy guys compare it FF Tactics, it's bears the name Final Fantasy, but it's also quite different, it's own thing - that makes sense.

I'm far from finishing it but it's a great pick up and play game with a lot of depth.

Playing a little bit of everything these days.

On the DS, I'm playing  Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, which is actually quite excellent. It's strategic, it's puzzly, it's rpgish, it's good!

PS3 wise, I got back into Uncharted 2 online. They tweaked the gameplay a bit, and they released a bunch of cool new skins and two new maps. Getting into Demon's Souls, which is great. It's tough, but it's also supremely satisfying making progress in it. Lastly I dabbled with Heavy Rain, just a couple of hours. I didn't think I'd like the game much, but I'm finding it to be better than I thought, at least as far as I've gotten.

I'm not afraid to admit that I like watching Figure Skating!

There was even an amusing bit of hateraid between skaters - the Russian Evgeni Plushenko is the only guy who can consistently do a Quad jump, and after a stellar short program said something like, " honestly, if there is no Quad, it is not Men's Skating ", basically calling every skater a lady. He had to eat his own words since he ended up losing to Evan Lysacek.

I also liked one Canadian guy who walked down the streets drinking beers after winning a gold in Skulls.

Low moment - pretty much the bulk of opening and closing ceremonies. With the exception of Bill Shatner, that was cool.

my birthday was this past weekend and I ended up playing a ton of games with pals, and got  a few new ones to boot!

We did a little tour of gaming through the ages - Some Nintendo and the 3 Turtle games, good lord that first game is still as hard as we remembered, PS1 Vib Ribbon, WWF Wrestlemania, Royal Rumble and Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game (lol). A few modern day games too, Peggle, showed off Braid...

I was kindly gifted Assassin's Creed II and Demon's Souls, and a buncha cool comics and other neato stuff. Been playing ACII first, enjoying it so far, vast improvement over the first.

I haven't played Darksiders or Red Faction, but I'm all in favor of sequels. We wouldn't have Assassin's Creed 2 or Uncharted 2 or Street Fighter II otherwise, so bring it on!

btw do you guys play with a controller or an arcade stick? I've mostly played SF's and Fighting games at home, with controllers. I'm thinking about taking the next step and upgrading. Whenever my friend comes over, he uses a Hori Fight Stick and I'm pretty terrible with it, but I can tell that given a little practice, my overall game would improve.
11  Gaming / Sony / Re: Peggle & Peggle Nights for PS3 on: February 02, 2010, 06:10:59 PM
I'm jumping on the Peggle bandwagon comparatively late, and since I introduced it to my gaming circle, we're all behind the times. But you're right, I play it once in awhile and usually when friends come over. Still - I feel like it's such a good game with a timeless quality to it, casual as it may be, that I think it's right up there with something like Dr. Mario, Bubble Bobble or Tetris in terms of puzzler classics .

IcemanFTW, I'm glad to hear you're liking Batman so far, it was one of my top games on 09 for sure. The guys at Rocksteady really "get" Batman - and there are parts of that game that might remain with you long after playing it.

I'm really hyped up about No More Heroes 2, and I don't even have a Wii nor have I played the first. It just looks like a cool, fun, and hilarious game, something that is lacking in so many games these days.

The other day picked up Braid on the PSN, taking advantage of a deal that is currently running:

http://kotaku.com/5454187/critter-crunch-braid--more-now-50-cheaper-on-psn

50% off a good selection of games. $15 was too rich for my blood re. Braid, even though I hear it's fantastic, but at the reduced price I couldn't resist. Also, if you haven't tried it yet, Critter Crunch is now like, $3.50, which terrific. So check em out, while the deal lasts!

As for Braid, I've played about 2 hours worth, still getting a feel for the game. But I like it so far, stayed up pretty late last night, the mysterious tone of the game, the sounds of "goombas" dying and coming back to life, slow motion groaning - made for a creepy midnight atmosphere.
14  Gaming / Sony / Re: Peggle & Peggle Nights for PS3 on: January 24, 2010, 12:52:05 PM
So peggle has started a minor revolution in my gaming circle of friends. We usually get together and play round after round of Street Fighter, but now it seems like Peggle is the game du jour - and in fact we treat both games in the same way. We have our own favorite characters, some are deemed "cheap", particularly Master Hu and his Zen Shot, and others are just "bottom tier" like Jimmy Lightning.

I don't have Nights yet - but yeah, Peggle is now definitely part of the conversation, these days!

Whoops I'm wrong - did a quick search and as it turns out, I didn't have Omega Supreme. So then I though oh I must have Fortress Maximus...double wrong! The big transforming base robot that I have is in fact, Metroplex: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroplex_(Transformers) . But my brother did have Trypticon. Amusingly, Wiki says that they've fought each other in the show, often using wrestling moves. nice.

The guy in the trailer is definitely Omega Supreme though. Omega Supreme. Sounds like an Arby's sandwich. Bacon Delux.
